#ThirstyThursday: Bahama Mama!

#ThirstyThursday: Bahama Mama!

That’s right, everyone’s favorite day of the week has returned! It’s finally time to celebrate another long work week with a drink that’ll take us all to that perfect island paradise we long for so desperately… so so desperately.

The recipe of the week is Coconut Shrimp made possible with the amazing shrimp found right on our store! While writing that post, I couldn’t help but think of how that dish transports me to a warm sunny paradise and of course, a warm sunny paradise wouldn’t be complete without an amazing tropical drink! (You know, the ones with the little umbrella in them) So get ready to crank up the heat in the house, grab a lounge chair, dig out a pair of shorts, find a beach boys playlist to play and whatever you do, DON’T LOOK OUTSIDE... Because today we are making a Bahama Mama!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • ½ an ounce of Rum (White or Spiced both work fine in this recipe)
  • ½ an ounce of Coconut Rum (Malibu being the most popular of course)
  • ½ an ounce of Grenadine
  • 1 ounce of Orange juice
  • 1 ounce of Pineapple juice
  • 1 cup of crushed ice (or really any ice you have works fine)
  • A blender (optional and i’ll tell you why)

Now, there are two ways to make this drink, some people like it just as a classic mixed drink which involves using a shaker or a jar/bottle to shake your mixture. Others, prefer to blend their drink into an adult slushy or daiquiri if you will. Both of these versions are amazing and taste very similar; they just have a very different style to them.

To make the traditional version of this drink, take your shaker or jar or bottle and place about a handful of ice into it.

Next up, add in your alcohols so your Rum and Coconut Rum. Then pour in your Orange juice and Pineapple juice.

Give it a good shake for about 30 seconds to make sure everything blends in really well.

Pour this mixture into a tall glass with ice and try to strain your mixture so that your ice from your shaker doesn’t make it into the final drink as these will now melt faster and water it down.

Finally, pour in your grenadine so that it gradually mixes and you get a beautiful layering effect that occurs. Do not mix after you’ve added your grenadine.

The second option on how to make this drink is using a blender to create a slushy.

In a blender, take your cup of crushed ice and add it all into the blender. Follow this by pouring in your Rum, Coconut Rum, Grenadine, Orange juice and Pineapple Juice.

Now, blend this mixture until it becomes the same consistency as a slushy, it should be light pink in colour.

In both versions feel free to garnish this drink in a multitude of ways: Orange slice, a piece of Pineapple, a maraschino cherry and to really escape to an island paradise, one of those little umbrellas like at an all inclusive resort!
