Today we are going to be talking about Poke Tuna which means we are also going to be tapping into some amazing Asian flavours that blend very well together but shine very brightly on their own as well.
Poke Tuna is essentially a Tuna Steak that has been cut into small cubes. These cubes can then be used for all kinds of recipes that are generally all just labelled as Sushi. Before we begin let this serve as a formal warning that a Poke Tuna Bowl does mean that you will be creating a full dish that includes raw fish, if this simply is not your idea of a fantastic meal then we have plenty of recipes that are the perfect match.
Now, let’s look at what you will need:
- 1 pouch of Frozen Poke Tuna (Available Here!)
- 1 cup of Soy Sauce
- 1 tablespoon of Rice Vinegar
- ¾ cup of chopped green onions
- 2 tablespoons of sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon of crushed red pepper
This section of the recipe is for preparing your tuna for the dish, we are going to talk about what else goes into the bowl later on.
Let’s begin by defrosting your pouch of Poke Tuna. Now it is important to point out that you can always use fresh Tuna but since we are not cooking this fish, the frozen fish will have less bacteria within it and therefore be a safer bet when making this dish.
Now once your fish has been defrosted, all you need to do is mix your Soy Sauce, Green Onions, Sesame Oil, your rice vinegar and Crushed Red Pepper in a large mixing bowl. Place your tuna in this marinade and place it in the fridge for roughly 2 hours before using it. Finally, your tablespoon of sesame seeds will only be used as a topping or garnish on the final product.
To continue, we are going to talk about how to use this Tuna in a delicious Tuna Poke Bowl. These bowls always begin with rice at the bottom. Your selection of rice can vary between Short and Medium grain japanese white rice (It typically says “Sushi Rice” on the bag) if neither of these options are available, then Calrose rice will work perfectly as well. Of course, you can substitute your own favorite kind of rice into this recipe since you are not rolling it into Sushi rolls and instead just eating mixed in a bowl (Quick Reminder that while your tuna is cold in this dish, your rice should be warm).
Now that you have made your Rice and your Tuna is marinating. You can now focus on some of the other aspects of your Poke Bowl. As this is a traditionally Asian dish there are many different ways that this bowl can go. You can top your bowl with Cucumbers, Avocado, Fresh Mango slices, Drizzle a little bit of spicy mayo on top of it and add more sesame seeds. You can also take other routes that include grilled eggplant, grilled zucchini, shredded carrot, broccoli and even cauliflower!
Poke Tuna bowls have been taking the world by storm since not only do they offer an amazing source of protein but they also include all of the different aspects of a well balanced meal due to it including protein, fruits and vegetables and a small amount of carbohydrates to keep you powering through your day.
